I had been waiting for the Robarts Library cherry trees to start blooming. I always have to pass the trees on my way to the gym so I was thrilled last week when I saw the pink flowers almost about the open.

I did not want to miss the famous cherry blossom at High Park this year and because I know it gets pretty crowded during the day I headed west towards the park around 5 pm.

The light was perfect when I got there. Torontonians of all ages had their cameras out, taking pictures from every possible angle. I include myself in the bunch. Here are a few of the photos I took with my phone. Run if you can make it there today or tomorrow, it is truly beautiful.

Yesterday I went to an open house for the first time. I am not looking into buying a home in Toronto (do not think I will for a while) but now with the beginning of the spring a lot of houses around my in laws’ place are going on sale. I decided to go out of curiosity and it only took a few minutes of my time.

In Canada, the spring and summer time is used wisely. During the warm months people declutter, have garage sales, repair their roofs, build and expand their houses. There is a lot of activity in the streets when it is hot out. The city becomes ALIVE, specially in the suburbs.

The property I visited is located in the neighbourhood of North York, which is about 45 minutes by subway from Toronto’s downtown. It was a two – storey house with a double garage, a living room, dining room, kitchen and small bathroom on the street level and with 4 bedrooms and one bathroom on the second floor.

If I was to buy that house I would probably renew the kitchen completely, invest on new kitchen appliances, would <del>improve</del> change all the windows and remove the carpeted floor in the basement. I wondered how much money I would need for that but let’s believe it would cost $100,000 Canadian dollars… (?)

The house was listed for $725,000 CAN. For that price, you can probably get a one – bedroom apartment in downtown Toronto.

To me, the idea of getting locked in a mortgage for a house that is not by the beach or in a warm place surrounded by mountains made me shiver. I saw my chance of ever getting a house in Toronto far, far away.

Some people advise that right now it is not the time to buy properties in Toronto, some expect the prices to fall in a couple of years but I remember hearing the same statement a few years ago and until now the prices are not dropping.

The one thing I know is that with those prices and choices if we ever own a place it is going to be in the centre, possibly a very tiny one. The option of not having a car and owning very few things seems to be the way to go.

A couple of days ago I went for the Free Wednesday at the Art Gallery of Ontario, which is Toronto’s fine art museum. Every Wednesday afternoon, from 6pm to 8:30pm, the permanent collection can be visited free of charge and also a few of the temporary exhibits. The rain, probably encouraged tourists and local to enter the gallery as the rooms were constantly busy.

This time, there was an interesting collection of photographs from artist Patti Smith, which I saw with pleasure. I felt as if I was opening a drawer and finding a friend’s personal polaroid pictures. There were some objects, like her father’s favourite cup, that were photographed and exhibited as well. Smith’s fascination with the French poet Rimbaud and other writers like Victor Hugo is portrayed in pictures of their personal objects (beds, clothing) and graves. The exhibition was interesting but a little bit gloomy for my taste.

I also visited the temporary exhibit about the early renaissance art in Florence. For those who enjoy religious paintings and manuscripts and/or the naturalism of the period this is a good opportunity to check it out. The works of Italian artists like Giotto di Bondone, Maestro Daddesco and Paccino di Bonaguida are displayed.

My favourite part of the visit was going to the Canadian art section. I had not seen the Canadian art since the AGO reopened a few years ago and I forgot how much I like some of the national pieces. Seeing again the work of painters like Kurelek (amazing!) and Cornelius Krieghoff (also amazing!) made my day.

There is also a big room at the AGO which only holds paintings of Canadian women artists. I took a picture of this painting of Laura Muntz Lyall while thinking of the spring.

Starbucks Coffee is the place to hate or to love. For many North Americans, Starbucks is an evil company which chokes small businesses, takes over every single popular city corner, sells overpriced coffee and attracts the rich and non – adventurous customer. People like to make fun of tourists who do not feel comfortable trying the coffee at local shops in foreign countries and are loyal to Starbucks, no matter where.

The truth is that I rarely went to Starbucks while living in Toronto, from 2006 until 2011. I always used to buy my double double or cafe mocha at Tim Hortons as it was the cheaper option and coffee for me it is not an “every once in a while” occasion. Also, it was not a habit for me to go and sit at a cafe until I changed my house for the backpack and later switched the PC for a laptop.

In the last couple of weeks I have been visiting the Starbucks along College St. with my laptop. I am in the process of looking for a contract job and doing some studying on the side so I sometimes find that getting out the house increases my concentration and therefore, my productivity. I have always been a fan of the library but with these cold temperatures I need to be in a louder place to observe, to mingle with the crowd, to be more human. I seriously need people in order to survive winters.

The funny part is that because now I am more of an observer I have had the chance to truly see the Starbucks clientele who is no more than a mix of the people of Toronto. I see the students catching up with their assignments, the homeless looking for a warm place to sit for a few minutes, the funky artist waiting to meet someone for a work interview and the mother buying a juice for her thirsty kid. From time to time, you hear a loud Torontonian dramatically talking about “horrible” first world problems but you do not need to be at Starbucks for that one.

More than once I have shared my table with some random person staying for a while. I have seen how people leave their laptops to grab something to eat, go out for a smoke break or to reach the bathroom. I am amazed at how they trust that no one is going to grab their belongings. I would not leave my laptop for more than a minute.

Starbucks have a reliable Wi-Fi, plugs to feed your computer and comfy chairs. Other famous coffee places in Toronto, like Manic Coffee, do not provide Wi-Fi so right there, the summer tourist in Toronto who is looking for an internet connection, will probably choose Starbucks over Manic.
