New to Acroyoga

Acroyoga is a combination of yoga and acrobatics. The practice has been around for about eight years. First time I saw a group of people practicing Acroyoga was at Burning Man Festival last year. The poses and changes looked so cool to me. Besides the physical exercise, the improvement of your core strength and flexibility you get to learn something new that can be a lot of fun and can be shared with your couple or friends.

Yesterday we decided to take our first class of Acroyoga at the Athletic Playground. We usually go for the Monkey Conditioning class and the Flexibility class but this week we thought that trying Acroyoga and Aerial was mandatory. I have been so curious to give it a try for a while but I know I need my body to be stronger, specially my wrists, arms and shoulders.

We had a good time at the class. There were a lot of beginners so we did not feel we were delaying the development of the rest. We formed groups of three or four and practice about 4 or 5 easy poses. The introduction was hard to me, I could only feel comfortable being a flyer. The amazing thing was that I quickly felt confident to trust the spotters and the base, the person carrying my weight and moving me around.

Like everything else, you need to devote a lot of hours and practice to see the evolution of your poses and achieve perfection. Ten, twenty classes are not enough to do what I saw people doing at Burning Man or at the A.P. You need to keep yourself fit, maintain a healthy body weight, work on your flexibility and core muscles strength even before thinking of going further with Acroyoga.

If you believe it is amazing to see guys practicing you might want to try a class somewhere because it feels even better when you are able to do it yourself.
