Life, Culture and Travels from the perspective of a Cuban
Pack up and leave
Categories: Cuba Inside Out

It looks like the year 2012 is going to end with location changes in my friends’ map. Another close friend left Cuba today, thinking of never coming back. He probably tried to pack a life in a suitcase but everyone he cares about stayed behind. Another bright mind is out of the island… Soon I will be going to Havana only to see my family. I am not sure if I am sad or happy… possibly both.

Everyone flights out of Havana with a dream and a heart full of heavy feelings. On one hand you have succeeded at actually getting out of the country so even if the future is uncertain there is already a road up ahead. On the other hand, all life as you know it will remain the same on the island but you will start changing, your life as an immigrant has started and quickly you will understand that this is a very personal experience. Adaptation to both being far from home and adjusting to the new place happens at the same time. Life does not save emotions for later.

Lots of great adventures are awaiting but also many hours of sadness and loneliness. You will be proud to call yourself a citizen of the world.

My words to him were clear: Do not look back. Pack up a light bag and leave! You are in the group of the fortunate ones. Be free, fulfill your dream of having a normal life. Even if times get difficult think you will see the light not too far in the distance while there is a permanent blackout in Havana. And I will visit you. We will have that bottle of rum together. Welcome to the internet arms and find me on Skype.
