Ron Caney, por favor!
Categories: Cuba Inside Out

My friend mentioned to someone that Ron Caney is the best one available these days and he could not believe me when I said I had not tasted it.

-“We have to go and buy one as soon as possible!”- the eager- to- be- drunk repeated.

Apparently, even my friend from Madrid was asking her parents to buy Ron Caney in Havana. Are only uncool Cubans and tourists buying Havana Club? It looks like it. I bought a bottle that same night and I could see why all the fuss about it. It is delicious!

I first got the Caney Oro Ligero, which is the golden one. I figured that if this rum was so amazing then the medium one HAD to be good. They also sell the white and the aged one, Añejo Centuria.

I know you are supposed to mix rum with coke with no other than the white (carta blanca) but I many times like to mix the golden rum with a little bit of cola, less than a finger, just to tint it. This Oro Ligero was so excellent that I did not want to spoil the taste by doing that.

If you go to Cuba I totally recommend to buy this rum for presents. It is well known that alcohol and smokes are cheaper over there so this is an affordable and wonderful gift for anyone who likes rum. Of course, the darker (Anejo Centuria) you go the better the quality and the price difference is really not noticeable. I ended up getting a bottle for a party in Toronto and the Cuban – Canadians were thrilled.

Ron Santiago is also a good choice for a rum other than the typical Havana Club. Since nothing is simple in Havana, you may not find Caney at the first store you go to, but do not surrender, Caney worths every step you take to find it.
